Please Don’t Forget To Use This Feature When Publishing A Story
It might be the reason why you’re not seeing organic growth.
Almost every day, I get questions from new Medium writers on how to boost their traffic.
Usually, when I look at their articles, I can immediately spot the problem.
If they’ve been posting consistently and don’t have any glaring errors, then it’s just a matter of how they’re formatting their work.
For example,
Are their titles and/or subtitles kind of bland or too ambiguous for the average reader?
Are they using clickbait, and not delivering on what they promised?
Last but not least:
Are they using tags?
It still blows my mind that newbies often forget to use this feature:
Medium gives you the option of suggesting up to 5 topics that your future audience may be interested in. Honestly, I feel like this is incredibly generous.
You’re given an opportunity to tell the algorithm who you believe would be interested in your work! And not once, but 5 different time.
Use every single available chance to push your work to a broader readership!
I always include 5 tags in my work.
Mix and Match
Generally, I don’t like to only use the huge keywords with hundreds of thousands of competing articles. I feel like it’ll be quite a challenge for smaller writers (myself included) to rank successfully there.
Unless a story has a great potential to go viral, I generally like to follow the following rule:
1 big tag
2 medium tags
2 more specific, niche content tags that can be anything.
This isn’t a hard and fast rule, it’s just what I’ve been using to consistently grow on this platform.
7,200 followers later, I think it’s doing its job.
Thank you so much for your time! If you still have questions about how to grow on Medium, as well as other topics related to making money online, feel free to comment, and I’ll do my best to respond in a timely manner :-).
Have an awesome day!
